A national shutdown does not achieve any positive objectives and political campaigning and differences, such as disputes relating to who should or should not be the President of the Republic, should be resolved through the ballot box and not through calling for shutdowns, business body the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) says. The challenges of low economic growth and high levels of unemployment, poverty and inequality cannot be resolved by resorting to extra-Parliamentary and negligent political action that disrupts economic activity, it asserts.
